Ben and Cory

Everyone said Ben was the hottest guy in our school because he had blond hair that hung over his eyes and big full lips like a girl and played soccer and wore jeans that looked like they’d been through a war and did this winking thing when girls looked at him; everyone liked all those things. Cory was his best friend and they were always together. He had dark curly hair and a mole on his cheek, and nobody talked about Cory the way they did Ben. But he was a lot nicer than Ben and seemed sort of sad, like maybe he felt like something was missing, and for those reasons I liked him and not Ben. Sometimes I wished I could tell him so he knew it wasn’t just Ben who everyone liked. But I couldn’t tell him because if he didn’t like me back I’d be too embarrassed and everyone would know. So I went on liking Cory more than Ben in secret because he had that sadness and because he sometimes seemed lost and because he was more, I don’t know, like me.
